UMIRA
Born in Tokyo, Japan. Graduated B.A in Fine Art with Choreographic Practices, University College Falmouth, UK (2009-12). B.A in Environmental Information from Keio University, Japan (2000-2002). Translation Work “Mystery of the White Lions” (by Linda Tucker/2015). UMIRA is an interdisciplinary artist and workshop facilitator. Since she stayed in Bali, Indonesian island at her early age and was attracted by Shadow Play, she explores light & shadow in various ways such as video, performance, photography, writing and workshop. She studied art & performance in the southwest England and has been inspired by butoh, Body-Mind Centering and Buddhist meditation as means to observe bodily sensations. Her first travel to South Africa was in 2011 to research on mystical White Lions and she continued to learn the indigenous culture and shamanism while staying in the local lion reserve until 2014. Her research and interests also includes animal wisdom, the origin of violence and rehabilitation. She aims to nurture human sensitivity through the process of her creation, thus honoring the value of both human and wildlife. She’s also a translator & interpreter as Emiko Tokai (real name).

東京生まれ。英国ファルマス大学・芸術学部（ファインアート＆コリオグラフィー）卒業。慶應義塾大学・環境情報学部中退。訳書に『ミステリー・オブ・ザ・ホワイトライオン』（リンダ・タッカー著/2015)。幼少のころにバリ島で過ごした体験が原点となって「影絵」に惹かれ、以後は十代から映像、パフォーマンス、写真、執筆、ワークショップなど様々な方法で、人間の日常に寄り添うように存在する光と影をテーマに作品制作。イギリス南西部で３年に渡ってアートとパフォーマンスを学び、舞踏、ボディ・マインド・センタリング、仏教瞑想などにおける身体観察のアプローチに影響を受けた。2011年に南アフリカへ初渡航、アフリカ大陸の希少動物ホワイトライオンの保護区に滞在。以後も長期滞在しながら現地の先住民文化やシャーマニズムを通して動物や自然界と人間の繋がり・コミュニケーションの方法を学ぶ。光と影の体感、動物的な叡智、暴力の起源と人間の更正などのテーマに関心があり、創作・表現のプロセスを通じて生の実感や自然との結びつきを育むことを目指している。本名・東海笑子。
